It was a wonderful two days, except for the fact that our Motel 6-ish hotel was $200 a night because of the holiday weekend, I assume. We went on two great runs: Johnson Ranch and Ontario Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-83107784800063939832015-02-10T19:44:00.001-08:002015-02-10T20:26:27.382-08:00Pink is Still the Best
I bought some angora yarn from Little Knits a while back, as in maybe ten years ago or more. It was a really good deal and very pretty yarn, but it just sat in my knitting basket making me feel a little guilty. After finishing my last cowl, I got the bright idea to knit one with some of my pink angora. This is called Forest Park Cowl. I have loved this cowl pattern for quite a while, even though I have very little call for wearing a cowl made of thick yarn like this one. The pattern is called Vitamin C, and it was really fun to knit, except for the middle patterning that I didn't really understand and wasn't that impressed with anyway, so I just skipped. I always think open pattern work with thick yarn is just anCarolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-84647186648661837962015-01-06T18:18:00.000-08:002015-01-09T06:50:02.755-08:00 A Little Gardening
It can get cold in Central California...really. I had thrown some overgrown chrysanthemums into this bucket and kind of forgotten about them a couple of weeks ago. Then it rained, and those poor discarded flowers kept blooming, peaking their faces above the water line, and then it froze, and they were still trying to survive.

Russ and I have always liked spending time in Cambria a couple of times a years, but after spending a wonderful weekend with some friends, staying at the Cambria Pines Lodge in November, we've decided that we need to spend more time there. One of the main reasons is a new discovery for us: The Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. Our first time running the trails there, it was warm and sunny, Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-60855181863800800742014-09-17T18:48:00.000-07:002014-09-17T18:48:07.753-07:00Instant Gratification
I've always struggled with weight a little bit. I'm fairly tall and usually somewhat athletic, so I won't say that I had a huge problem, but it nagged on me that I was overweight when I exercised so much. A little over two years ago, I went to the doctor for a check-up and had high blood pressure, which I think now was more from current stress than a big health problem, but it scared me enough Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-31855226732871157502014-08-31T18:18:00.002-07:002014-09-02T06:45:56.435-07:00Comfort Zone
Kai seems to have settled in well at Monterey Bay, and we're doing O.K. too although I still very much have the urge to turn back the clock if I could. I've told Russ that I think Kai is especially equipped for rolling with changes because he has so many "comfort" elements to his life that can follow him anywhere: soccer, working out, drawing, and World of Warcraft (I feel like I should make aCarolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-37891054933191849732014-08-28T17:24:00.004-07:002014-08-28T18:41:18.758-07:00Changes

Twenty-Year-Old Selfie
My son, Kai, left for college at CSU Moneterey Bay last weekend. I've shed some tears over it, but I'm also so happy for him. He lives in MONTEREY now, after all. I was in labor with him for over twenty-four hours, and when he was finally born, he was a little the worse for wear, with a pretty big conehead. I received a nice note from an acquaintance last week, telling me how much she had enjoyed my blog. It was just what I needed to get a little inspiration again. I still knit a lot and enjoy it, so it seems silly not to record my accomplishments....and failures. So, here I go again.

I was sitting watching the Olympics a couple of nights ago, and I was thinking about starting a new knitting project, but then I realized that I couldn't start something because I had unfinished business. I just wasn't happy with the arms on the baby Poonam sweater I finished last week, so I took them out and reknit them. In teaching, you start having colleagues who were also your students as soon as five or six years after they graduate, so you can imagine that since I've been teaching for over twenty-five years that I have tons of ex-student-fellow teachers. One of them, who has actually moved on up to teaching at the community college next door to our high school, had a baby in December. She's a knitter. Most of them did that thing where they would post only sporadically, and then would officially sign off or just disappear. My blog has never been that focused where I felt it was a burden as most of the "retired" bloggers would often profess to feeling. I just haven't felt the motivation. I posted a picture of my "Little Cotton Rabbits" bunny earlier, but I forgot to post the picture with the little headband I knit for my grandneice, along with it. It was super easy, but cute, I think. I haven't been knitting much since this accomplishment. It's just so hot, and not conducive to wanting to work with wool, which is my favorite "medium."
I did consider bringing some Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-62157336865386202822013-08-11T19:46:00.001-07:002013-08-12T11:51:50.362-07:00"Sunday Afternoon" of Summer
This will possibly be my most random post every. I haven't posted much this summer despite lots for fun adventures, including some knitting successes, as well. We usually end our summer with a visit to my parents in Humboldt County, which is from nine and a half to eleven hours away from us, depending on which roads we decide to take and how terrible the traffic is. This year was the Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-86434714983950077582013-07-19T17:54:00.001-07:002013-08-11T18:53:42.164-07:00
I have such nice "blogdom" friends. I initially posted pictures of these Brittany Walnut knitting needles without any text attached. To tell the truth, I accidentally posted them. I had taken the pictures because I was selling them on Ebay. I still got three nice comments about them. Anyway, I ended up selling this pair of needles for $45. Rolly got his splint off last week and is doing really well. We still can't leave him though and have to watch that he doesn't get too rambunctious. So, we just took him to the beach with us.

This picture doesn't do justice to how I spent my afternoon today. I made chimichangas with three of my favorite students/ex-students: the Arellano sisters. Several years ago, the oldest sister, Stephanie brought chimichangas to a potluck for our class one day and I've been in love with them ever since. It's not like I've worked all summer, or full days, even, but I've worked! This summer I'm not working. I can't entirely take credit since I wasn't asked to teach a college class, but I didn't even try for a high school session, so I'll congratulate myself on that bit of Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-90835096664307929182013-05-13T20:16:00.001-07:002013-05-13T20:17:35.026-07:00A Little Progress
It's not a particularly exciting project, but I can actually post a little knitting progress, for a change this week. Paige has been very insistent that we go up to see her at U.C. Davis to let her meet our new puppy. How long of a trip is that, you might ask. Well, on a good day, it's four-and-a half hours. That was obviously a ridiculous idea because little Rolly is only six weeks old and Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-28065021509931856882013-05-05T15:58:00.000-07:002013-05-06T06:14:39.949-07:00Rolly
I hardly every get much knitting done this time of the year. With the end of the college semester coming up in three weeks and the high school finishing the first week in June, I'm almost always struggling to find much free time at all this time of year. And now, I don't anticipate knitting even a little bit until summer vacation because we have a new little member of our family to Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-38982933290585566602013-04-15T17:51:00.000-07:002013-04-15T19:54:45.968-07:00Good For Me!
I shouldn't be as proud of these socks as I am, but I am. I had quite a bit of trouble getting started with them, and I'm almost surprised that I've finished them. I really like Spilly Jane's patterns, but this pattern is one of my favorites. I left off her skulls this time, but next time I'll add them back because they are kind of a neat addition to the pattern.

I was considering entering a recipe contest tomorrow. The Haggin Oaks Farmers Market in Bakersfield is having a "carrot cook-off," and since I eat hummus almost everyday and love variations of it, I thought of entering chipotle carrot hummus. I cheated and found a recipe for smokey carrot hummus from The Year in Food, which I altered a little, omitting the sesame seeds and adding cilantroCarolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02782876823581408975noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30771707.post-86690165878711848152013-04-04T18:47:00.000-07:002013-04-04T18:47:15.446-07:00Fighting Second Sock Syndrome
I've been fighting "SSS," and I think I may just win. The weather has been in the 70s this week and is supposed to be about the same next week, so I really doubt I'll be wearing these socks any time soon, but I'm happy to be near the completion of a project after so many false starts this winter. I even started a little bunny too. Good Friday is like the "Sunday Afternoon" of Spring Break to me, besides it religious significance. I've had a wonderful break, but I'm starting to feel that little bit of angst connected with the fact that I have school work to do that I will probably postpone until Sunday night. Oh well, it's been fun while it lasted. Russ and I started the week by spending a day on the coast on Saturday.
